Fresh produce doesn’t grow on supermarket shelves

The impact of widespread storms across Australia will have a massive impact on the availability of fresh produce. The crops that are salvageable are facing rejection. All because of stringent protocols set by the major supermarket chains.

Natural disasters come at enormous financial cost to the producer. They are facing estimated losses between 40 per cent and 100 per cent, leaving farmers with no income. High input prices, strict policy regulation, and low farm gate prices only add to the pain. Some producers have experienced multiple events, leaving them in a risky position.

The impacts aren't only financial. Extended periods of stress and anxiety greatly impacts their mental health and wellbeing.

So, before you jump up and down that your favourite produce isn't available, remember the hardship the producer is facing. That produce doesn't grow on supermarket shelves and behind all the fresh produce we enjoy is a farmer.

The food security of our nation relies on them.
